                                 About the film

Nirgendwo in Afrika (2001)

Directed by Caroline Link

Certificate 15

Running time 2h 11 minutes approx.

The film is based on Stefanie Zweig’s autobiographical novel of the same name and tells the story of the German Jewish Redlich family who flee Germany for Kenya in 1938.  Both the adults have difficulty accepting the hard new life which replaces the well-to-do existence they enjoyed in Breslau, but their young daughter Regina quickly learns the language, makes friends and takes an interest in the new culture.  The historical and family themes are set against the vibrantly portrayed Kenyan culture and tensions continue throughout because of the different reactions of each family member to their changing fortunes.  With Juliane Kohler (Jettel) and Merab Ninidze (Walter).
