Based on a true story, the film tells of top counterfeiter Saloman Sorowitsch, who is Jewish and a prisoner in a Nazi concentration camp. He is part of a privileged group of prisoners who produce counterfeit English and American money for Nazi use in return for favourable treatment from the guards. He is locked in an ideological argument with fellow prisoner Burger who thinks they should sabotage the operation because its success will prolong the war. With Karl Markovics (Sorowitsch), August Diehl (Burger) and David Striesow (Obersturmbannführer Herzog).
