About the film
Au revoir les enfants (1987)
Directed by Louis Malle
Running time 100 minutes approx
Julien and his older brother are sent off to a catholic boarding school during World War Two. A new boy, Bonnet, seems strange at first, but Julien gradually befriends him, eventually finding out that he is Jewish and has been taken in by the monks in an effort to hide him from the Nazis. The film deals with timeless themes like childhood, adolescence and friendships as well as those arising from the persecution of the Jews in occupied France. It is based on events from director Louis Malle’s own wartime childhood. With Gaspard Manesse (Julien) and Raphael Fejtö (Jean Bonnet).
